Putting Things Together

Writing, spawned from thoughts, which emanated from feelings about the things that surround me. These may or may not scare you. However, I assure you, I am quite able to control myself in large crowds if I have to. And, I can behave around clients too. Hear that you clients? Hello?

The Design Experience

What is design?
What does Pat do?
What do we think?
Why should you care?

"fifteen years ago, companies competed on price. Today it's quality. Tomorrow it's design."

Bob Hays
Professor of Manufacturing
Harvard University

"the old weapons for achieving real differentiation have become inadequate. No longer can the comparative advantage be sustained for long through lower costs or higher technologies…The design dimension is no longer an optional part of marketing and corporate strategy but should be at their very core."

Chris Lorenz
The Design Dimension

"What's imperative is the creation of a style…Linking you to the community. You can only do that through good design."

Anita Roddick
Founder, CEO Body Shop

What is Pat doing?

We are marketing aesthetics I suppose - we are marketing sensory experience that contributes to our organization's identity.
The operative word here is "EXPERIENCE"
Like the

Starbucks EXPERIENCE

or

NIKE EXPERIENCE

Pat EXPERIENCE, ETC

And this experience can be managed very specifically.
We manage aesthetic experience. Or, mapping strategic vision to sensory stimuli.

The factors of Design Experience:

These happen due to special structural and meaning qualities (gestalt characteristics, novelty, complexity, narrative, representational contents, etc)

· Arouses tensions in the spectator that combine with residual tensions within the spectator
· Is able to increase the readiness to be emotionally involved
· Makes intensification and personalization possible by providing material adequate for the evocation of feeling.
· Promotes aesthetic distance in order to inhibit direct action and degree of personal involvement
· Activates repressed wishes and provides for their imaginary fulfillment
· Appeals to many personality types by means of multi-leveledness, abstractions and different kinds of symbolism.
· Elaborates on four aspects of design reality:
Normative reality
Common reality
Archaeological reality
Prophetic reality

What does this mean?

Well, as mechanisms for improving the world, PAT's subversive desires are channeled towards revealing the process of their own construction as well as violating any complacent attitudes towards their perfection

The designer has developed an architecture perfecting the "machine for living" by turning furniture, fixtures, and entire structures and buildings into highly tooled machines. We are manipulators of the technology of building.

The designer replaces the discipline of a column with the expressiveness of the machine, pushing architecture into its form of madness.

"De-Architecture is a way of dissecting, shattering, dissolving, inverting, and transforming certain fixed prejudices about buildings in the interest of discovering revelations among the fragments."
James Wines
De-Architecture, 1987.

The designer believe that Architecture becomes the actual construction of an alternative world composed of building blocks in the world around us. It thus reveals the inherent coherence of the program and context, as well as the building materials. In order to emphasize this revelation, Pat has borrowed tactics from the artist Gordon Matta-Clark, who ripped open existing structures and buildings and , in the act of revelation, exposed implied shapes (circles, arcs, spirals, etc)

More than anything else, the designer validates the investigation of architectural and environmental issues it works among as a form of criticism. We have developed an integration of historical research with modern design form, a visionary projection of design possibilities, and an analytical deconstruction of an existing reality. We propose oppositional architectural strategies.

Psycho-Technology

The new forms of expression in design?

Thoughts bred out of new psycho-technology, inevitably invented out of this point in time - from video games to interactive CDs to plain old linear films and tapes and even painting and sculpture. The old still exists and is valid, but there are now more choices.
